One Of Cuba’s Greatest Olympic Promises Defected

The triple Jordan Diaz left the delegation of Cuba in Europe and was excluded from the Olympic representation of the island for Tokyo-2020, finally of 69 athletes, confirmed this Saturday a senior director of the Institute of Sports (Inder) of the Cuban regime.

The athlete stayed in Spain, where he was with the team participating in an athletics tournament in the town of Castellón.

Diaz, 20, “abandoned his team in Europe,” revealed José Antonio Miranda, director of High Performance at Inder, quoted by the digital site Jit, an organ of Inder.

He said that, along with gymnast Manrique Larduet (24), they are the “only qualifiers not included in the (Olympic) payroll of the island, finally composed of 69 representatives in 15 sports.

20 years old and 1.85 meters tall, Jordan Diaz was considered one of the greatest promises of Cuban sport and the greatest in the triple jump.

In 2018 he was crowned champion at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires and since then he has shone in the adult category, despite missing several months of competitions due to injuries and having been infected this year with covid-19.

A year earlier he had already shown his class by being crowned U-18 Youth World Champion in Nairobi (17.30 m), the best youth record in history, and in the same 2018, he won the U-20 World Cup in Tampere and the subtitle in the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Barranquilla.

It exhibits as personal best the youth record of Cuba (17.49 m), achieved in 2019 in Camagüey, in the east of the island.

With regard to Larduet, double world medalist in gymnastics in Glasgow-2015 and finalist in several apparatuses at the Rio de Janeiro-2016 Games, the federative indicated that he is “devoid of the physical and technical form necessary for an event of that level”.

Last Monday was announced the defection of Raudelis Guerra Zayas, a member of the basketball team, who left the delegation during a stopover in Madrid. In this way, the team is only nine men ahead of the 2022 Americup qualifier to be held in El Salvador.

Miranda said that the distribution of Olympic quotas is headed by athletics (18), wrestling (12), boxing (7), and judo (6). The rest are held by canoeing (5), shooting (5), weightlifting (4), table tennis (2), beach volleyball (2), swimming (2), modern pentathlon (2), taekwondo (1), artistic gymnastics (1), cycling (1) and rowing (1).
