Smartphone screens are one of the hardware elements that we must take into account the most when choosing a device that more than meets our needs. Therefore, it is not surprising that manufacturers are increasingly striving to offer panels with better features, among which of course is the resolution. In fact, it is perhaps one of the most important requirements to take into account within the specifications of a screen, since the quality of the content reproduced on them will depend largely on it.

Sometimes, due to simple ignorance, the size of the screens tends to be confused with the resolution, without this necessarily having anything to do with it. For example, two screens 5 inches in size can have different resolutions and consequently, offer us completely different results. To try to better clarify this issue, we are going to see simply what is screen resolution and what are the different types that we find in today’s smartphones.

What is screen resolution?

First of all, we are going to clarify the concept of resolution well before listing the different existing types. The image displayed by a screen is divided into pixels. To understand it well, a pixel is the smallest part in which an image can be divided. With this clear concept, it is understood that the resolution determines the number of vertical and horizontal lines formed by pixels that a screen can display.


If, for example, it is a large screen but with a low resolution, it will have fewer pixels per row and columns, which translates into a rather poor image. On the contrary, a normal-size screen with higher resolution will delight us with excellent image quality.

Now, so that we understand it with the figures that we normally see in the specifications of a phone (or any monitor in general), a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels indicates that the screen shows 1280 pixels in horizontal line and 720 in a vertical line.

Known as HD for its acronym in English High Definition, HD responds to a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It is a resolution very established in the market that offers satisfactory results but that today we no longer find in too many new terminals, especially in high-end.

This is the resolution that we find most lately in the phones that have been arriving on the market despite the invasion of extra-long panels, and that allows us to display 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. This type of resolution initially started with televisions but leaped smartphones in 2012 with the HTC J Butterfly.

Since then, Full HD resolution has been established in the entire high-end, medium-high range and it is not too difficult to find it also in very cheap terminals. Despite the spread of this resolution, manufacturers have been seduced by the next level for some time: QHD resolution.

QHD resolution

This resolution, also called 2K, is capable of displaying 2560 x 1440 pixels. For a while, it has been the highest resolution that we found in high-end devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S, although it was not long before the replacement. And it is that the market not only welcomed 4K screens by Sony at the time, but it has turned towards Plus models with the arrival of frameless mobiles. Almost all catalog leaders are ditching pure QHD to embrace Plus resolutions

The QHD resolution, also called 2Kor 1440k, is still limited to the most cutting-edge mobiles, although in the vast majority of cases it is accompanied by the “+” symbol at the end since the normal today are mobiles that abandon the 16: 9 classics and opt for a panel with a longer aspect ratio.
